The Olean Public Library in Olean, NY, is hiring for the following position:

Head of Youth and Adult Programs

The Olean Public Library is located in the city of Olean, NY, located in the rural Southern Tier region of Western New York State, and is a co-central library in the two-county Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System. Our busy Library serves over 20,000 cardholders and circulates approximately 120,000 items annually. The Library recently completed an interior renovation project and is considering a building expansion in the future to provide additional programming and meeting room space and a much more user-friendly environment for our patrons.

Part of the Library’s mission is to provide culturally enriching, educational, and recreational programs for all patrons. We are recruiting for the Head of Youth and Adult Programs position to build on the organization’s successes in this area. The ideal applicant will be self-driven; a team player; have the ability to plan, schedule and host programs at the Library; possess strong supervisory capabilities including motivating staff and recognizing and utilizing skill sets; be flexible with regard to work hours; have a positive and friendly attitude; have an awareness of childhood and teen development; have exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills; be creative with both print and social media as well as a good public speaker. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of successful programs for children, teens, adults, and families, as well as for diverse populations including LGBT-identifying community members. The applicant should also have an appreciation and ability to work with local artists and historians to arrange exhibits in the Library’s Gallery. Preferred experience includes proven success in writing and administering grants.

The Head of Youth and Adult Programs may also assist in providing reference services, including assisting patrons with use of library equipment, technology, and other services.

Salary is negotiable beginning at $40,000 with benefits, depending on experience. This is a Civil Service position, and therefore appointment to the position is provisional pending successful competition and placement through the Civil Service Examination process. Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in library/information science from an accredited American Library Association institution, or recognized by the New York State Education Department as following accepted education practices, have two years of professional experience subsequent to the Master’s degree, and be eligible for a New York State Public Librarian’s professional certificate at time of application.
